Icon Analysis
The three things that I have chosen to represent contemporary icons are One Life to Live, Hello Kitty and Michael Jackson.
One Life to Live was created by Agnes Nixon and first aired on ABC on July 15, 1968. Sadly, tomorrow, Friday, January 13, 2012 will be last day that the show will be aired. OLTL is a soap opera icon that is set in the fictitious town of Llanview, PA. It is a very diverse soap opera, with many different story lines.
Michael Jackson is a musical icon. He has had many albums that have sold millions of copies all over the world. When Michael Jackson died he continued to be very popular. Millions of Michael Jackson fans mourned his death.
Hello Kitty is the third icon that I chose. I haven't ran across anyone who has not heard of or seen the white cartoon kitty with the red bow on her right ear. Hello Kitty was created by a Japanese company, Sanrio, and made her debut in 1974. Hello Kitty is such an iconic symbol that it has lead to the opening of two Hello Kitty theme parks, a restaurant named, Hello Kitty Sweets was opened in Taipei, Taiwan. In Yuanlin, Taiwan, they even opened a Hello Kitty themed maternity hospital.
I chose these three as my contemporary icons because of the memories and emotions that each had had on my life. Michael Jackson's Thriller album came out when I was young. I remember listening to it on my radio outside with my friends. We would sing along and even made up dances to some of the songs. It was the good times I remember when I was young. I have liked Hello Kitty for many years. I think the thing that I like most is that she doesn't have a mouth. This I think allows for you to give her expression. Hello Kitty reminds me that I am still young at heart and can sometimes rely on things to comfort me as they did when I was a child. The last icon that I chose was One Life to Live. This I chose not only because of the number of years that it has been on television, but because I first started watching this with my mom when I would be out of school when I was growing up. Mom never missed an episode from the day that it aired until the day that she passed away in 2002. As I watch the final episodes it makes me sad because of the memories that I have with my mom.

The Twilight Saga

Pop Culture to me is something that is what is popular now or a "fad". This could include books, movies, television shows or music. It is what the majority of society believes to be "in".
Pop culture effects me everyday. It determines what is playing on my favorite radio station, what is showing on television or even what is in the magazines that I read.
